Why is is Xenical recommended by so many doctors for fast, safe
weight loss?
Xenical represents one
of the most recommended slimming pills. Distinct from other
medicines that stimulate the brain to suppress appetite, Xenical
uses a fat blocking mode of action that works non-systematically
in the gastrointestinal tract. The end result is approximately
30 percent of dietary fat passes through the body undigested.
Therefore, Xenical blocks some 30% of the calories from fat from
being absorbed.

How does Xenical work?

Distinct from
other medications that effect neurotransmitters to stimulate the
brain to suppress appetite. Xenical uses a fat blocking mode of
action that works non-systemically in the gastrointestinal tract.
Dietary fats are large molecules that must be broken down by enzymes,
called lipases, before they can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Xenical interferes with these lipases by forming covalent bonds
with the them in the stomach and small intestine, this essentially
inactivates the enzymes so they are no longer available to hydrolyze
dietary fat into an absorbable state. Thus, allowing for some
30 percent of dietary fats to pass through the gastrointestinal
tract unchanged. *Xenical works here, covalently bonding to the
pancreatic lipases

What clinical studies have been completed?
Xenical was evaluated in a placebo-controlled, double blind study
to examine the effectiveness of a medication for weight loss and
the prevention of weight regain over a two-year period.
During the
first year, participants who met the definition of obese were
placed on a low calorie diet while randomly given a placebo
(sugar pill) or Xenical. Research following the first year indicated those individuals
treated with Xenical (120 mg per dose) lost approximately two-three
times
more weight than the control (placebo) group.
"This
study demonstrates that partial inhibition of fat absorption in
obese subjects can produce sustained weight loss," the authors
conclude. "Subjects treated with Xenical plus a mildly controlled-energy
diet lost significantly more weight than those treated with placebo
plus diet even though all subjects received a high standard of
care and similar dietary counseling…These observations collectively
suggest that Xenical is a useful adjunct to dietary intervention
in producing and maintaining weight loss over two years."

Recent study
in Switzerland revealed the following:
Basel, Switzerland -- The weight loss medication Xenical helps
patients achieve rapid and sustained weight loss according to
the results of a new study designed to reflect real world usage
of Xenical in clinical practice.
The 12 month
study of 430 overweight men and women (BMI of 30-43 kg/m2), was
designed to assess the effectiveness of Xenical in patients who
are responsive to treatment. Patients who achieved 15 per cent
(approximately 9kg) weight loss after 3 months and maintained
this after a further 3 months of Xenical treatment, were followed
for one year. During this time weight loss and other health improvements,
such as reductions in blood pressure, were assessed.
The results
suggest that the efficacy of Xenical in a real-life clinical practice
setting is even greater than that demonstrated previously in clinical
trials:
- The greatest
weight loss was seen in the first four weeks of treatment, with
an average weight loss of 6.1 kg.
- Three out
of four people achieved 15 per cent weight loss by month three,
losing an average of 8kg.
- The average
weight loss after one year was 16.6 kg. One in two patients
in the study lost more than 10 per cent of their initial weight,
and over 9 in ten people lost more than 15 per cent -- an amount
of weight loss shown to clinically improve the health and well-being
of overweight people.
Commenting
on the results, lead study investigator Professor Hermann Toplak
from the Karl-Franzens-Universitat, Graz, Austria said, "These
results demonstrate the significant benefits of rapid and continuous
weight loss with Xenical in a clinical practice setting. Patients
who respond rapidly to treatment continue with treatment and achieve
long-term weight loss success."

What is the appropriate dose of Xenical?
The recommended dose of Xenical is one 120-mg capsule taken with
each meal that contains fat. Individuals may take Xenical in
combination with a moderately reduced calorie diet up to three
times per day. In the event, a meal is without fat content or a
meal is periodically missed an individual may omit that dose.
Doses in excess of
120 mg three times per day have not proven to advantageous to
weight reduction. For the best results, individuals should
practice eating a well-balanced, moderately reduced calorie diet
that contains no more than 30 percent of the calories from fat.
